A message from the toolkit creator

Hello, I’m Denise!

I’m a professional copyeditor and proofreader specialising in non-fiction writing, especially business and education.

Over the years I’ve helped hundred of writers to improve their content and gain confidence in their writing abilities.

Often business writers apologise to me for their bad spelling or woolly wording, but they really shouldn’t, because it’s my job to fix it!

You’re in business because you’re good at what you do, whether that’s making beautiful furniture, managing social media accounts or teaching martial arts.

You didn’t work hard at building your business because English was your favourite subject at school, yet here you are, having to write lots of content to connect with your potential clients.

And suddenly it’s like you’re back in that English class, worrying about your writing being judged.

I bet that wasn’t part of the plan!

But what if you’re not able to work with a professional editor? Perhaps your workflow or budget doesn’t allow for it – but that doesn’t mean that you can’t benefit from how a professional approaches their work.

Improve your writing by using the guides, templates and cheat sheets in this toolkit.

You’ll be more confident that you’re presenting your business in the best light possible with clear, polished writing.

DO YOU HAVE THESE COMMON WRITING WORRIES?

WORRY 1 – Spelling, punctuation and grammar

You worry that your spelling lets you down. (Is it seperate or separate?)

You’re never sure where an apostrophe should go (or if you even need one).

Your grammar is a bit shaky and you know that you sometimes get things wrong.

And everywhere you look people are criticising others for that wonky spelling or misplaced apostrophe.

It’s enough to make you stop writing!

WORRY 2 – Confused and misused

There are some words we just know we’re going to mix up.

Do you want to know a secret? You’re not the only one!

Everyone has their weakness with word choice when words look or sound similar, some of us more than others.

And if you have a learning difference such as dyslexia, you may find chosing the correct word a real issue.

Should you use affect or effect? Lose or loose? Rein or reign?

Trying to use the right word in the right context can make your head spin!

WORRY 3 – Lack of consistency

Do you capitalise words on a whim, depending on how important you think they are?

Can you never remember if you hyphenate co-ordinate or not?

Have you ever stopped to think about how you deal with numbers in your writing?

Inconsistency in how you capitalise and hyphenate words or present numbers, among other things, can distract your readers and look a bit slapdash.

Worry 4 – Patchy proofreading

How do you know what you don’t know?

How can you be sure you’re catching your spelling mistakes, word choice bloopers and inconsistencies?

You’re not a professional proofreader so how can you hope to spot your mistakes, especially when time is tight?

Introducing
THE EDITING TOOLKIT

What experience do I have?

I’ve been an editor and proofreader for more than ten years and have helped hundreds of writers, so I know the common problems people can have!

As well as editing and proofreading many books, teaching materials, articles, courses and blogs, I also teach other editors and proofreaders.

So I know the guides, templates and cheat sheets in this toolkit work!

With this toolkit you can improve your writing by using the ebook guides as a reference whenever you’re unsure of spelling, word choice and punctuation.

The templates and cheat sheets draw on my experience and share professional editing techniques for creating clear, consistent writing.

And the proofreading checklist helps you to take the same structured, layered approach to proofreading that I and other professionals use.

No. This course focuses on using the tools in Adobe Reader DC to mark up a document effectively and efficiently. It does not teach you the skills needed to identify and correct the errors. This course is a useful adjunct that sits alongside core skills training in proofreading.

No. This course focuses on the tools available in the free Adobe Reader DC software, which is the industry standard in publishing. Other software is available, but that is outside the scope of this course.
